History of Yugafusha
(I) Establishment of the “Study Group of local culture and heritage”
◆ Established in November 2009 to continue studying Okinawan cultural heritage with volunteer , students from Kyoto University of Art and Design.
In January 2010, the first “Okinawa Training” was held on the Miyako Islands (Miyakojima, Irabujima, and Ikejimajima).
Since then, the trainings were held each year at the end of January. Until 2019, about 20 different islands in the Ryukyu Arc (including the Amami Islands) became the training area.
Such islands include Amami Oshima in the north, Hateruma Island in the south, Namboku Daito Island in the east, and Yonaguni Island in the west.
(II) "Yugafu-sha" = thatched, Hirai Masato Family House
In May 2009, the house was named “Yugafu”, with the intention of a “peaceful and fertile world”, which is the meaning of the word in Okinawan language.
◆ In May 2014, volunteers from the study group of local culture and heritage worked on the “Yugafu-sha / Clay Wall Reconstruction” project. With a total of 110 participants including architects specialized in Japanese old house restoration, masters, plasters, joinery craftsmen, local residents, study group members, etc., it took nine days between May and November for the earth wall around the house to be brought down. then Mai Takeki (?) and the rough wall were restored. Aiming for the “reconsideration of handicraft”, Mr. Hirai opens “Yugafu-juku” or “Yugafu School of Old House Reconstruction”, under the guidance of Mr. Yasutaka Kawahara, an architect specialized in the restoration of old Japanese houses
■Integrating the activities of I and II, Yugafu-sha was established in January 2015 as a Regional Culture and Heritage Study Group based in Okinawa for the purpose of exploring, studying experiencing and enlightening the local handicraft culture of different regions.
